While the European-spec Toyota Yaris set to exit production soon, Daihatsu readies a rebadged version of the model for introduction in May 2011. Dubbed Charade, the model is expected to cost somewhere around 15,050 euros, as the German edition of Autobild reports.
The news, however, comes shortly after Daihatsu revealed plans to withdraw from the old continent by the end of 2013, due to a significant decrease and sales.
"Despite the announced suspension of the distribution for 2013, we work with undiminished effort in the success of the brand," Daihatsu Germany Managing Director Matthias Heinz was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
The ‘new’ Daihatsu Charade will come available in just one bodystyle (a five door hatchback) and two trim levels, as well as in just one engine variant: a 1.3-liter gasoline engine developing 99 horsepower and coupled with either a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Fuel economy will be about 45 mpg (5.23 l/100km) combined, while emitting a reasonable 120 g/km of CO2.
Toyota is expected to showcase both the European-spec third-generation Yaris and its hybrid version at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Expected to feature Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive Toyota, the latter is rumored to be more fuel efficient than the Prius.
Back when the news of a hybrid version of the Yaris surfaced, in 2009, word was that the model will be capable of traveling 40 km on a single liter of gas (2.5 l/100 km or 94 mpg), compared to 38 km/l for the Prius (2.63 l/100km or 89.4 mpg)
