This time, Dan and Leon as a question that has been bugging the automotive world for the past millennium if not more (grouse exaggeration): How do you make the Daihatsu Mira cooler than it already is?

In case you didn’t know what a Daihatsu Mira, that’s a kei car from Japan. However, our man with a plan, who’s name is Dave, decided a jet engine is a much better fit for the Mira.

Dave’s wife though he couldn’t do it when he told he he wants to build a jet dragster. Shame on her! However, our protagonist is an aircraft engineer, and he’s so cool that he has five more jet engines. And of course, with a jet car you should definitely do a carbeque... with a whole pig... marinated of course!

Daihatsu Unveils Mira e:S Kei Car in Japan

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :
Kei cars are big business in Japan, as they get around the really heavy local taxes and are cheaper to run. They even make little, tiny pickup trucks and minivans on these platforms, and Toyota’s subsidiary has just released a new version of the popular Mira called the e:S.

The main focus of the vehicle is to get better fuel economy from the already frugal little car. The automaker has stated that it has revised all aspects of the engine, transmission and body to make them as efficient as possible.

As a result, the Mira e:S burns 40 percent less fuel than the conventional model. Power comes from a three-cylinder 650cc gasoline engine that provides an impressive (for its size) 52 horsepower at a screaming 6,800rpm and 60Nm (44 lb-ft) of peak torque at 5,200rpm.

The official economy figures fro the Japanese cycle state the car will go for 30 km on a liter of fuel (which is about 70.5 mpg US), according to the JC08 Mode test cycle, or 32 kilometers per liter (75.2mpg US) on Japan's 10-15 Mode test cycle.

The base Mira e:S is still an expensive little car, priced at JPY800,000 ($10,500 or €6,650).

The ‘new’ Yaris Daihatsu Charade

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :
While the European-spec Toyota Yaris set to exit production soon, Daihatsu readies a rebadged version of the model for introduction in May 2011. Dubbed Charade, the model is expected to cost somewhere around 15,050 euros, as the German edition of Autobild reports.

The news, however, comes shortly after Daihatsu revealed plans to withdraw from the old continent by the end of 2013, due to a significant decrease and sales.

"Despite the announced suspension of the distribution for 2013, we work with undiminished effort in the success of the brand," Daihatsu Germany Managing Director Matthias Heinz was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

The ‘new’ Daihatsu Charade will come available in just one bodystyle (a five door hatchback) and two trim levels, as well as in just one engine variant: a 1.3-liter gasoline engine developing 99 horsepower and coupled with either a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Fuel economy will be about 45 mpg (5.23 l/100km) combined, while emitting a reasonable 120 g/km of CO2.

Toyota is expected to showcase both the European-spec third-generation Yaris and its hybrid version at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Expected to feature Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive Toyota, the latter is rumored to be more fuel efficient than the Prius.

Back when the news of a hybrid version of the Yaris surfaced, in 2009, word was that the model will be capable of traveling 40 km on a single liter of gas (2.5 l/100 km or 94 mpg), compared to 38 km/l for the Prius (2.63 l/100km or 89.4 mpg)

The all-new Daihatsu Move

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :
Daihatsu Motors Co. is the Japanese carmaker best known for its small urban vehicles with boxy lines. The company has released a full photo gallery of its fifth generation Move that has been unveiled in Japan.

The company’s smallest car burns as little as 3.7 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers (65.5 mpg), making it the most fuel-efficient petrol engined model available in Japan. Paired to a CVT gearbox, the second-generation 660 cc KF engine produces 52 hp and 60 Nm, with the power driving either the front wheels or all four wheels.

More “impressive” than the power provided are the technologies embedded in the small engine, which include a start-stop system, a plastic electronic throttle body and the world’s first i-EGR (i-Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system that monitors the combustion state through the use of ions. This is the first time a CVT gearbox without an electric oil sump has been fitted with idle-stop system. The advanced little Move also features an auxiliary power unit, preventing problems such as the resetting of the navigation system once the engine is stopped.

The pint-size 2011 Daihatsu Move model measures just 3395 mm (11 ft 2 in) in length (the new 2011 Fiat 500 Sport is 3546 mm or 11 ft 8 in) with a wheelbase of 2455 mm (8 ft 1 in). The Japanese manufacturer said it has shaved 35 kg or 77 pounds from the weight of the previous model, through a series of measures such as weight loss dashboard, door panels and other components.

The all-new Daihatsu Move in front-wheel drive form costs from ¥1,066,000 to ¥1,372,000 ($12.700 to $16.310), while a more trendy 2011 Daihatsu Move Custom will set Japanese customers back between ¥1,247,000 and ¥1,534,000 (U.S. $14.830 to $18.250). The automaker said it is targeting monthly sales of 12,000 units in Japan.

Daihatsu Move Is Japan's Fuel Economy Leader

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :

Japanese small car manufacturer Daihatsu has managed to triumph over its much larger cousin Toyota as far as non-hybrid passenger cars on the Japanese market are concerned. The company’s small car, called the Move, burns as little as 3.7 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers (63 mpg), while Toyota only manages 3.77 l/100 km with its redesigned Vitz, which will be released later this month.

Daihatsu said fuel efficiency improved to the 27km/litre mark, the highest achieved using the Japanese test cycle, through measures including the adoption of a newly developed idle-stop system called 'eco idle', an updated second-generation KF engine and an approximate 35kg (77lbs) reduction in weight. According to the manufacturer, stopping the engine automatically to save fuel when the car stops improves fuel efficiency by 2km/liter.

The small Japanese manufacturer says that it is the first company to combine idle-stop with a CVT transmission without an electric oil sump. The systems also include an auxiliary power unit, preventing problems such as the resetting of the navigation system once the engine is stopped, a Japanese market first according to just-auto online publication.

Other weight savings were achieved by the usage of a plastic electronic throttle body and the CVT gearbox, which also provides optimal power delivery while saving fuel. The flash memory navigation system fitted to the model is also equipped with an eco-driving function, providing Japanese motorists with the optimal fuel-efficient driving on the basis of driving condition analysis, and an energy-saving route search feature that recommends the most fuel-efficient route to the destination.

Daihatsu Materia ICECUBE

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :

A tuned vehicle is special by definition, but when the car that the project is based on comes with an original design as a standard feature, the effect of a modification package is amplified. This is the case of the Daihatsu Materia, which was customized by Inden Design, with the result being a truly unusual street ride.

Dubbed “ICECUBE”, the modification kit targets both the optical and the technical areas of the Japanese car. The vehicle wears a body kit consisting of an extension kit that covers 10 body parts (EUR 448), a new rear bumper with an integrated diffuser (EUR 448) and a set of daytime running lights (EUR230). The exterior pack is completed by carbon mirror caps, door handles and boot lid (EUR 1,200).

The car is dressed in a white VIP paint (EUR 5,500) and rides on a set of 18 inch BBS Champion LM three-part wheels (EUR 5,800), which feature high-grade steel exterior frames.

As for the tech part, the vehicle has been fitted with a high-grade steel exhaust system (EUR 1,198) that comes with a high-flow catalyst converter and two polished pipes, offering a distinct sound. In addition to that, the car uses a H&R sport helical differential gear (EUR 780), that offers maximum road traction in all weather conditions.

The Daihatsu Materia ICECUBE’s interior comes with silver-finished carbon elements (EUR 1,450), such as mirror, center console, door switch covers, side sills and B pillar cover. The car also offers an Alcantara finish for the speedometer shaft, the A-column and the door armrest. The passengers can enjoy a premium sound system.

1990 Daihatsu Rocky Recalled in USA

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :

Toyota managed to create a complete recall madness. Nowadays, whoever hears about a recall gets instantly scared, as problems seem all related to painful, fiery deaths. But that’s not always the case.

Unfortunately, Toyota is not the only car you can get yourself cremated in. Recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration studies show that the Daihatsu Rocky model produced between 1990 and 1992 might have some problems with its engine, engine cooling system, exhaust systems and emission control. Therefore 4,000 vehicles will be recalled in the United States.

There’s official information that Daihatsu is recalling certain model year 1990-1992 Rocky sport utility vehicles. The main concern is that the check valve in the fuel vapor evaporative emission control system might develop a crack in long-term vehicle usage due to insufficient durability under some environmental or operational circumstances. The consequence could be a leak of fuel evaporative gas vapor into the vehicle which might result in a fire.

All Daihatsu has to do now is have the old check valve replaced with a new check valve of improved construction. As expected, the service will be performed free of charge starting in March 2010. Because tracking down affected Daihatsu owners might be somehow complicated given the fact that the cars were produced more than 17 years ago, they are asked to call at 626-968-6764, according to NHTSA’s official website.

2011 Daihatsu Boon

Post by Car Exist

Cars Daihatsu on this post under tags as bellows :
Although almost absent from the automotive scene in the last year, Japanese manufacturer Daihatsu is still out there and, apparently, has been hard at work, with a little help from Toyota, to completely redesign the Boon, the manufacturer's compact hatchback.

For the 2011 model year, the Boon brings the same overall size, interior space and styling, but packs a wide range of changes to the mechanics. The new model features engines with a higher fuel efficiency, lower emissions and a new CVT transmission.

The engine which powers the Boon is a 1,000 cc 1KR-FE unit, providing a fuel efficiency rating for the two-wheel drive models of 22.5 km/l or, how the rest of the world calculates, 4 l/100 km (58 mpg). The other unit on the Boon, the 1.3l, achieves 21.0 km/l ((4.7l/100 km or 50 mpg). As said, both units are paired to a CVT transmission.

Safety wise, the Boon comes equipped with VSC, SRS, side airbags for the driver and front-passenger seats, SRS curtain shield airbags for front and rear seats and Dynamic Support Headrest.

It also employs the same technologies now common in other vehicles, like antilock braking system (ABS) with an electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).

"The Boon was the first vehicle for the Japanese market that DMC developed jointly with Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), and since its initial launch in June 2004 it has been popular among a wide range of customers thanks to features that include an easy-to-maneuver compact body, individualistic styling, and a roomy interior," Daihatsu says in a release.
